On 26 April 2003, Aron Ralston, a young man of twenty-seven, set off for a hike in the canyons of Utah. He is alone and has told no one of his tour. Experienced mountaineer, he masters the most beautiful peaks in the region. Yet, deep down a canyon, the unthinkable occurs: above him stands a rock and his arm gets trapped in the wall of a rock. Here he is trapped, threatened to dehydration and hypothermia, plagued by hallucinations! He thinks of his ex-girlfriend, family, and whether the two girls he met in the canyon just before the accident will be the last people he will see. Five days later, realizing that relief will not arrive, he will have to take the worst decision of his life ...
After movies as different as Shallow Grave, 28 Days Later, Sunshine Slumdog Milionaire, it is an understatement to say we expected the new Danny Boyle. Especially since the subject of 127 hours seemed a challenge to the height of the director. Telling the struggle for survival of a man alone, trapped by a rock lost in a cavity at the bottom of a canyon.
The film is a virtuoso when it opened. A slew of amazing shots, alternating film and digital, are linked in a syncopated editing in perfect harmony with a harsh sound work. For the first few minutes, Boyle immerses us in his account without slag or unnecessary presentation. Despite an evident mastery of the full range of technical resources, it is supercharged. The camera spins around the action, rushes in, takes off with impressive ease, but it quickly evokes a tech demo and not a narrative schema. James Franco is impeccable, as usual, but the poor guy did not get much to eat. This is an adaptation of the real life story of a mountaineer and this movie is available on streaming sites which abound on the Internet. Streaming sites are optimized for the iPhone.
