True leaders universally realize that the saying "there's no I in team" just isn't so. This is regarding the idea that a team member should put the team's goal and interest before their personal agenda. The problem is that each team member does have his/her own goals and the leader must show each team member how their individual goals fit into and complement the goals of the team.

A distinguished motivational speaker once used the analogy of a train yard filled with various train cars, each filled with value and with an appointed destination, but unable to proceed until the locomotive, or the leader, made a connection to each car in order to move them all forward. The lesson here is that a leader must connect with his team first, otherwise the team will not attain the desired goal or destination as a result of doubt and mistrust.

The corporate world is using team building exercises more often. People use these games to get to know their teammates better, build trust, and improve communication. Each person possesses a unique kind of personality and unique abilities. Team building exercises meld differences of the individuals to create a stronger group. Those with innate leadership abilities will emerge, while dreamers will dream up new concepts and meticulous types will ensure that a task is performed correctly.

Team building exercises may vary from brief and inexpensive activities performed in-house, to lavish excursions at luxury spas. These both have their places in the corporate world and personal budgets. "Two Truths and a Lie" game is an inexpensive and popular exercise. Each participant makes two true statements about themselves and one false statement. The others must determine which statement is true and which is false. People see a new side of their co-workers through this exercise.

The Video Scavenger Hunt is a bit more costly; each team receives a video camera along with a list of things to record, each of which has a certain point value. For example, if a teammate shakes hands with a policeman, the team receives 100 points, or they can receive 150 points if they walk a stranger's dog. People go through a series of activity related questions during a predetermined time limit to figure out who wins.

A tasty team building concept involves pairing teams with culinary experts to learn about teamwork while preparing food. This team building exercise allows members to enjoy themselves while building relationships and communication skills. Once the cook-off contest is over, they get to enjoy the results of their efforts. This is certainly a type of team building exercise that will wet your appetite!
