Ernest Hemingway is a great American novelist as well as writer of short stories of the twentieth century. Some of his famous works include A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Old Man and the Sea among others. These works became very popular and are still read by people out of interest.

Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899 in Oak Park, USA. Soon after passing from the high school, Ernest Hemingway joined in the reporting team of the Kansas City Star in 1977. He served at WWI in France as an ambulance driver and also at the infantry in Italy. He was wounded in the war on his 19th birthday. He then joined the Toronto Star in Paris and was taking active interest in the literary circle of the expatriate.
When the Spanish Civil War broke out, Ernest Hemingway worked as a correspondent taking the side of the loyal. As the WWII broke out, he fought the battle and after the war he made Cuba his home in 1945. He took active interest in writing even while serving the nation. He received the Nobel Prize in 1954 for his work on literature. When Castro threw out Hemingway from Cuba he went to Idaho and settled there. He was constantly weighed down by bad health while his mental health too degraded. In 1961, he shot himself to death.
The writing of Ernest Hemingway tells about the lives of people who face regular danger in their life but face them with courage. The people in war front served his source of inspiration. His writing style is direct and pithy and there is good influence of the writing style of Gertrude Stein as well as Ezra Pound. He was very much inspired by these two persons and we find mention of their name in many of his works.
The first of his books became hugely popular due to his style in writing. After Ernest Hemingway publication of the book, The Sun Also Rises, he was considered as the spokesperson of the generation lost. The book tells about some psychologically shattered and disenchanted expatriates of Paris who after the war takes help of psyche in their physical activity. A Farewell to Arms was his next novel. The book tells about the heart-breaking love affair between a driver and a nurse. His other works include Men without Women, which is a collection of short stories, The Fifth Column that is a play and Winner Take Nothing.
The experience Ernest Hemingway received from the civil war in Spain led him to write For Whom the Bell Tolls that tells about brother hood in human society. The Old Man and the Sea is a novella which tells about the spirited courage found in an aged fisherman of Cuba.
He achieved huge success in almost all his writings and that he is why he is still alive in the hearts of many.
