The primary principles of wine tasting are appearance, aroma, and taste. Let’s look into all three.
The primary principles of wine tasting are appearance, aroma, and taste. Let’s look into all three.

The colour of the wine will show you if the wine is bad or good. In regard to white wine, coloring plays a large role. More color means a longer aging process and thus more flavor. In fact, most white wines are green or yellow, not white. While colorful white wine is a great thing, a brownish white wine has gone bad and needs to be dumped. Red wines are the precise opposite. Darker reds mean brand new wine and lighter reds indicate aged wine. Since aged is normally better, look for lighter colored wines.

The scent of the wine is significant, too. Aroma plays a big role in taste, so the smell of the wine is paramount. Take a quick whiff of the wine while it swirls to get a first impression. If you appreciate what you notice, take a second deeper whiff of the wine centering on its smell.

Now, once you have seen that it's a good wine and smelled that its a great wine, you need to taste it. Take an initial taste of the wine and assemble your first impressions, much the same way that you probably did with smelling the wine. Your second taste of the wine ought to be a bigger gulp, testing your very first impressions to determine if the wine can really endure your scrutiny. You are looking for a more complex vision of the tastes on your tastebuds. Be sure to give full attention to the wine's aftertaste, too.

And there it is. Wine tasting is basically composed of these three things. And remember, when you experience more wine tasting, you'll develop more discerning tastes that will further enhance your wine tasting experience.
