Take a look at your business card. How many different ways are there to contact you? Land line, direct dial, mobile, fax, email maybe even instant massager. This can be confusing for both your customer and you. With so many means of contact and so many ways to leave a message sometimes important messages get missed. This is a problem experienced by most of us at least some of the time.

Unified communications is a phrase widely used in telecom's discussion but what exactly does it mean? Unified communications is not a single product or service but rather an experience delivered across multiple platforms and devises. One part of that experience is Fixed Mobile Convergence.

Fixed Mobile Convergence delivers a seamless integration between fixed communications devises such as an office desk phone and a mobile phone. In its most simple form Fixed Mobile Convergence is often known as mobile twinning. This is where a call is delivered to both a desk phone and a mobile at the same time when a caller dials a single number. To achieve this, an advanced Communications server or telephone system is required such as an Avaya IP Office or Communications Manager.

During a twined call that is answered on a mobile phone the telephone system retains control of call. This means that the user can access system features such as call transfer, conferencing, music on hold and call recording just as if they were sat at a desk phone. If the user arrives at the office during the conversation they can simply lift the receiver of their desk phone and seamlessly transfer the call without the caller knowing.

Avaya has a free to download application that works on most Smart phones that provides a visual GUI to control calls. This not only helps the user to navigate the features of the phone system but also provides a cost saving function. The application will make the mobile call the office before calling an outside number. This means companies can cut down on the number of minutes they require on their mobile contracts as call are routed over the companies landlines. This is almost without exception a cheaper way to make calls as the call the office is normally free.

When calling a colleague the user only has to remember a single extension number even if that worker works at another branch.
