Debates rage back and forth as to whether or not food addiction is real, but if you ask someone who indulges in binge eating to just stop doing it you will see just how real it is. Many people will over eat at a meal occasionally. What defines binge eating and food addiction is the feeling of being completely out of control. The compulsive overeating episode is followed by extreme feelings of distress or remorse after having binged.

People who binge eat may also struggle with depression, guilt and hatred of their own bodies. They eat massive amounts of food to dull the pain of their lives and distract themselves from dealing with the challenges they face. But once they have eaten until they are stuffed they begin to berate themselves for the lack of control, for how much weight they are gaining, and they are filled with shame and self-hatred.

There is relief for food addiction for Christians who are ready to surrender this destructive behavior. There is freedom from binge eating if you are willing to make a new commitment each day to change the way you have been mistreating your body, which is the temple of the living God. The first step is to admit that you are powerless. Sounds odd, right? The Apostle Paul said in, 2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”(NIV) God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. He invites us to lay all of our struggles at the foot of the cross and lean on him. He will guide you, give you strength and place the right people in your path that will help you to walk in the promises he has for your life.

Titus 2:11-12 Tell us, “11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,” (NIV) When we begin to say, “No” to the ungodly habits of binge eating and food addiction, he can replace those compulsions for a hunger and thirst for righteousness. But you have to take the first step and be willing to be obedient to the word.

Freedom from the bondage of sin whether it shows itself in the form of drug abuse, alcohol or food addiction, can come only when we are ready to receive it and walk in it. Making any kind of change in your life takes lots of discipline. Old habits become engrained and your flesh will fight you for every inch and every pound. The Bible reminds us in Hebrews 12:11: “All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.”(NIV)

Freedom comes when you turn to God for strength rather than turning to binge eating to snuff out your pain. It comes when you set aside ungodly habits and return to praying daily, joining the fellowship of other believers, and developing healthy habits to replace the old habits. Freedom comes when you commit to yielding to the discipline of a Christian weight loss coach or counselor who will guide you to a healthy way of life and a stronger relationship with God.
