Owners of Android-compatible phones such as the HTC magic and the T-Mobile G1 will be pleased as punch to learn that there are some great free games out there just waiting to be downloaded from the Android Market. Here are a few to try - and a few to avoid!

Mahjongg - A fairly faithful rendition of the Japanese pairs game. Unfortunately, the touchscreen is the only input device that can be used with this game, which pretty much rules it out unless you have very slender fingers to select the tiny images with.

mem - This game may be a little simple, but the implementation of the touch screen control device is first class. The aim of the game is to click on an icon from a fixed list as soon as a matching icon appears on the screen. Great sound effects, but little in the way of longevity.

Minspace War - The small screen and fiddly keypad controls make this otherwise promising shoot-em-up very difficult to enjoy. Avoid.

MisMisMatch - The aim of this deceptively simple puzzle game is to press boxes, arranged on a grid, with your finger, that are not currently part of a pair in order to flip them over so that they match with an adjacent box, and can be taken out of play. There is a helpful tutorial mode to guide you through the basics, and a selection of difficulty settings.

Pac-Man by Namco - Help Pac Man in his quest for pills, oranges, and ghosts around the famous blue mazes of this arcade classic. This arcade perfect version of the old favourite, complete with the inter-level animations featured on the original coin-op machine. However, the lack of a joypad really lets this game down and prevents you from being able to get out of the tight spots as quickly as you often need to.

Pop Pop Popcorn - This highly original puzzle game places you in the oft-coveted role of popcorn chef. The aim is to heat individual popcorn kernels by holding your finger over them until they pop. However, if your finger is too long in one area, then you run the risk of burning the neighbouring popcorn, so you need to develop a strategy. Responsive touch screen controls and great visuals help to make this one of the best Android games around at present.

Santas War on Terror - Help Santa take on the forces of terror in this side scrolling platform game. Although the name might be the cause of some amusement, the fiddlesome controls, weak visuals and predictable gameplay mean that this game has little more than novelty appeal.

TxtSpeed - If you are looking for a game to help you build up your text message typing speed, then TxtSpeed could be just the ticket. If you are not, however, then you will probably want to give this game, which is somewhat low on thrills, a miss
