Everyone knows that wedding budgets are getting tighter so we’ve come up with a few tips and advice about how to get your wedding dress for less!

1. Shop around – Once you’ve found your style or designer you really love, find out which bridal boutiques stock the dress. It’s worth visiting several stores stocking the same style to find out what their prices are. You may find there’s a big difference in price even when dealing with the exact same dress. Given that the saving could run into the hundreds, don’t limit yourself to just your local bridal shops.

2. Never accept the first price – Whether you’re looking to spend a modest amount on a dress or a small fortune, it pays to negotiate on the price. Even a small discount will give you more to spend on wedding accessories.

3. Ask for more – Haggling with a bridal boutique will only get you so far. Their gowns are their stock and trade after all. If your dream dress is at the upper limit of what you can afford or beyond, think laterally. Ask if the shop will throw in any extras if you buy the dress for the price they are offering. If you can get your shoes or tiara for free then at least you’ll be saving some money elsewhere in the wedding budget and cutting your overall spending.

4. Shop online – Bypassing high street shops and buying direct from companies who trade on the internet can save you a good amount of money, especially if you buy American designs from boutiques in the States. Be very careful what sites you use though as there are a lot of disreputable companies out there who may take your money and fail to deliver the dream dress. Before you buy anything, search online at review web sites and check feedback from other customers. If there’s a huge amount of negative feedback then beware.

5. Custom-made designs – What is it about your dream dress that you like? Is it the overall style or simply the name attached to it? If it’s the style you really like then take a picture to a local dress designer and find out how much it would cost for them to make something similar from scratch. With designer dresses you’re likely to save a substantial amount. What’s more, you can have a say in the finer details and end up with a truly unique design.

6. Pre-loved dresses – Most wedding dresses are only worn once, which means there are a lot of near mint condition gowns out there just hanging at the back of a wardrobe. There’s a strong second-hand market for wedding dresses. eBay alone has over 100,000 up for sale at any one time. If you don’t mind buying a pre-loved dress then you can save yourself a fortune – a portion of which can be invested in altering the dress if it’s not an absolute perfect fit first time.

7. Ex-display discounts – many bridal boutiques sell of their old display stock at a fraction of the full retail price, which is fantastic for a bargain hunting bride to be. Keep your eye on your local wedding shops and you could pick up your dream dress for much less than you thought. Some high street charity shops also have dedicated bridal shops where you can pick up a second-hand or vintage dress for a steal.

8. Bridal outlets – There are many companies specialising in discontinued styles and surplus stock, which you can pick up for a snip of the original price. Some dresses sell as low as 10% of their original price. Larger wedding fairs are a good place to pick up wedding bargains, if you don’t mind trying on dresses at the event itself or making do with last season’s styles.

9. Think outside the bridal box – If you prefer simpler, less formal designs you don’t need to opt for a bridal dress at all. Bridesmaid dresses are typically much cheaper than bridal gowns and many can be ordered in white or ivory, making them a good budget-friendly alternative.

10. Rent your wedding dress – Renting a dress for the day will cost you far less than buying a gown, and if you’re never going to wear the dress again, you may find there’s little incentive to buy.
