It may seem obvious what the hazards are for a cleaning company when working at height, but look again at the figures. If appropriate risk assessments are being carried out and staffs are competent in the first instance surely the accident statistics would not be as high as they are currently.
Employers and company directors have in the past faced huge fines and imprisonment where serious or fatal injuries have befallen members of their staff. This should certainly serve as a warning to anyone who is engaged in an industry that allows operatives and cleaners to work at height in an unprotected environment.
Reach and wash water fed systems are a great way of ensuring compliance with the first level of the hierarchy of measures as set out in the Work at Height Regulations. However, it is not always possible or practical to use such a method. This is when equipment such as ladders, scaffold towers and cherry pickers are often utilized.
There is clear guidance on the safe use of such equipment particularly in respect of training. For example, PASMA Training for Scaffold Towers and IPAF Training for Powered Access Machines. Although training in itself is not enough; knowledge and experience are also essential components of competence, a successful outcome from a training session will inevitably lead to a safer workplace.
A number of large cleaning contractors have recently completed Work at Height training programmes with BOSS Training and have commented on the advantages of having a highly skilled and trained workforce. Richard Grinham from RSS UK commented that health and safety training was very important and that it was essential for all staff to be fully trained when working at height.
It is even possible that insurance premiums can be reduced if companies can provide evidence of ongoing commitment to training.
