Due to the increasing standards being set within the educational system, high school classes are becoming more rigorous and demanding than they have ever been before. No longer can a student simply attend class and hope to pass the course with only a minimal amount of effort. Instead, high school students are expected to come to class prepared to learn while engaging in challenging discussions and activities that extend beyond school hours. While most students thrive in this environment, others may fall far behind. Unfortunately, a lack of motivation is often the reason for students’ failing to succeed in their high school courses, and the consequences of this failure can extend beyond high school and into college. To help these students, it is important to be able to recognize a lack of motivation while helping them to develop strategies to ensure their success.

Signs of a Struggling Student

When an unmotivated student first begins to experience trouble in school, the signs may be subtle. At first, they may begin to fail to turn in homework assignments. They may also overlook deadlines for major projects and avoid studying for exams. As a result of the student’s lack of interest and effort in their academics, parents may begin to notice lowering grades and failed courses. Teachers are often the first to recognize a lack of motivation and may call for a conference to discuss the student’s failure to progress in a course. When confronted, an unmotivated student will often respond with apathy or anger while claiming that they are simply not interested in school. Once a student’s struggles with motivation have begun to affect their learning, then it may be time to consider how high school for unmotivated students can be utilized to provide the student with greater academic support.

Reasons for a Lack of Motivation

Many times, a student is blamed for their lack of motivation and simply told to try harder. Unfortunately, this is not very successful because it is very common for a student to have an underlying reason for their lack of motivation. For example, ADHD is often associated with problems focusing in class. A student’s inability to pay attention may lead them to daydream or tune out of class discussions. When a mental or physical health condition is the reason behind a student’s lack of motivation, then high school for students with ADHD may need to include a program or additional services specifically designed to foster their motivation.

Reengaging Unmotivated Students

High school for unmotivated students should focus on conveying new information in fun and exciting ways. Teachers in a school with a program designed specifically for students who are lacking motivation often present new information in a way that stimulates several of a student’s senses. Additionally, these programs may offer alternative assignments, such as independent projects or experiential learning that can enable a student to present their knowledge in a variety of different formats.

Helping an unmotivated student will take time. However, high school for students with ADHD or other learning disabilites can offer a solution for helping a student to develop their motivation. Once a student is surrounded by the right types of academic support, they will begin to develop an interest in the subjects that they are learning that will be reflected in their increasing grades and desire to do better in school.
