We have to get back one century ago in order for us to start the story of the plush toys. In 1903, Richard Steiff designed the first plush toy, or as it is also known the first stuffed toy. This first soft bear differed from all the previously existing dolls, because it was made from the plush material in the inside, and from simple cloth. In 1903, Peter Rabbit became the first stuffed toy to be patented.
In case you ever wonder whose brilliant idea was to create the most famous bear ever – Teddy bear, we reveal you the secret. It was the fair deed of Morris Michton, USA, who created the first teddy bear. He found the inspiration for this creation when he saw Theodore Roosevelt with a bear cub. And teddy bear got its name according to Theodore R. who was popularly called ‘Teddy’. Mystery solved!
During the period of Great Depression, that is 1930s, Sock Monkeys became extremely popular. I think that the name is self-explanatory.
Next we have Amigurumi, which first appeared in 2003. and since then they have become enormously popular. They are characterized by extremely large and big heads, and little extremities.
Another well-known stuffed toy is beanie Baby. Those are stuffed beanbag animals, and they were firstly introduced in 1993. All of them were really cheap and they all got their own names and characters, which made them very popular at the time.
In 2005 the Ganz Company, one of the most famous Canadian companies for producing plush toys, created Webkinz stuffed animals. They were really different from all the previous plush toys, because each Webkinz came with the secret code, which you could have used to play with the toy online. We can just imagine what burst this toy had made back then.
The most recent invention in the plush-toy industry are definitely Pillow Pets. As the name suggest, they can transform into the pillow when necessary, and get back into the shape of the toy in a second.
As we have seen, there have been numerous types of these plush, or stuffed or cuddly toys, whatever you like to call them. When you ask someone to tell you the first thing that pops to his mind when plush toys are in question, he will certainly say SOFT and CUTE. And those are their main characteristics which managed to preserve themselves from losing, even during this long period of time. Perhaps that is the reason we all love them so much.
