During the holiday season, competition for customers' attention is especially fierce. Many businesses may find it difficult to receive - and hold - people's attention when it comes to advertising and showcasing their products. There are many things you can do, but we're going to talk about a few simple tips that will increase your sales during the holidays.

Make sure stock is in season. This should be true all year round, but especially during the holidays. As much as you want to push old stock with promotions and gracious mark-downs, it's more important to brush it aside and promote the products that are in season. One might think that huge discounts and sales will attract customers - and it will, until they see the products are ones they can't even use right now. One example has to do with clothing; you wouldn't want to buy a swimsuit in October or November, so there is no need to put forth the effort to market something like that. Stay seasonal and don't push old merchandise, and your customers will thank you.

Test your site infrastructure. You need to make sure that your site can handle the sudden influx of traffic that comes during the holiday rush. In addition to conducting performance tests to make sure your site can bear the load without going offline or loading too slowly, you should also make sure you're prepared in case it does happen. Make sure your error pages are specific about what's going on and what the customer can do. Offer information that goes beyond a generic 404 error message and provide contact details so a customer can call the problem in or connect with customer service to place an order over the phone. Also be sure to list store locations (if any) and store hours - anything that will help a customer make a purchase or make his online experience easier.

Use Facebook and Twitter to push your holiday promotions. Although you should be doing this year round, it is particularly important to use social networking during this time of year. Make sure your Facebook web page is up to date and regularly update your accounts. Make yourself visible on Facebook and Twitter and interact with your customers. In addition to using fan pages, also use Facebook ads with a catching headline and thumbnail picture to get people's attention. Take a picture of one of your products and include a keyword or two in your title. One way to spice up your headlines is to present it in the form of a question. It will get your customers thinking and will draw people's interest; they'll be more likely to click on the link than if you had a generic headline or your logo.

In order to attract and keep customers, it is important to be diligent and persistent while still allowing the customer to maintain control. For additional assistance in preparing your online store for the holidays, you can contact an e-commerce provider.
