Honest Moving Companies

Well, it is nice to think that all moving companies are honest. And probably most moving companies are honest. But that doesn’t mean that every moving company will deliver all of the goods that they picked up from you. And honest mistakes do happen.
Well, it is nice to think that all moving companies are honest. And probably most moving companies are honest. But that doesn’t mean that every moving company will deliver all of the goods that they picked up from you. And honest mistakes do happen.

Moving companies use temporary workers so they may not be familiar with all of them. But for the most part the workers are being supervised probably by a supervisor on the move and also by the home owner, you. And certainly you will watch them closely. If you have packed the items yourself then the only thing that could happen is one of your boxes may disappear and it may not be the fault of a worker.

When moving companies move you they may use the largest truck they have. Especially if they can combine several households into one truck and then drop them off at the various locations en-route. In the best of circumstances, the boxes of household goods are kept together. But it does happen, and one of your boxes or items is unloaded at someone’s home besides yours. If that person doesn’t unpack everything right away your goods may sit for a while undiscovered.

Of course the moving company will do everything in its power to find that box but it may take a while. Generally when the items are unloaded, there is a tally of everything that was picked up which is noted next to a number with a corresponding sticker. The sticker is put on the box or item and the item is loaded in the truck and ticked off on the tally sheet. When the goods are unloaded in theory, every box has a sticker still attached to it and as it comes into the house, someone, perhaps you, checks it off. But little stickers often don’t stay stuck. Again this is not the fault of anyone but this does happen. So the person checking off the boxes may check without a sticker and that particular box may not belong in that house. That leads to someone missing an item or box.

There are some unscrupulous moving companies that will come and give you an estimate for moving you and when they arrive at the destination the cost of the move has gone up for reasons such as they miscalculated the weight or something else. They will demand that you pay them in cash or with a cashiers check for the difference before they will unload your things.

But this may also be an honest mistake. You can help prevent this happening if you walk along side the estimator and make sure they list every item. If you doubt their weight estimate, then ask them why they picked it. Discuss it with them. People do look at things differently. Perhaps if it is a heavy item have them attempt to move it so they realize it is not as light as they may think. Doing this in advance may make a more accurate moving cost.
