It seems like every week there are some new hot trends in food trucks sweeping the culinary world and fascinating the eaters of the nation. Food trucks have been around since shortly after trucks were invented, and before that, there were other mobile forms of food businesses such as the food carts that are still found in many cities around the world. The food truck has often been associated with cheap and greasy food. In the last few years, however, there has been a revolution in gourmet food trucks, and it continues to create new trends all the time. This was evidenced by the last National Restaurant Association annual show in Chicago, where several food trucks were featured.
The Hot Trends in Food Trucks
The food truck provides an opportunity for a chef to show their gourmet skills to a mass audience without the initial and ongoing expense of owning a restaurant. In fact, some experts speculate that the economic meltdown of 2008 actually spawned the gourmet food truck revolution. There was less capital available for restaurateurs to get businesses going, and there was more of a demand for affordable dining, even among gourmet foodies. Southern California is one of the hubs of the food truck revolution, where restaurant space was even tougher to come by and practically impossible for budding restaurateurs to pay for. Just to illustrate the boom of this trend, consider the fact that in Los Angeles County alone there are 4,000 licensed food trucks in operation.
A food truck can be purchased for as little as $100,000, or for more timid entrepreneurs, they can also be leased for a few thousand dollars a month. It can be pretty pricey to have the truck covered in branding graphics: as much as $75,000 for a customized job. Even large corporate brands are getting into the food truck business these days, which is why there is such a demand for these expensive custom-logo designs. Taco Bell has launched a fleet of sleek, new food trucks, for example. This provides a dual purpose: selling product and advertising the brand wherever the truck rolls. Many food truck business owners get their vehicles for less by purchasing a remodeled used truck or remodeling an outdated truck themselves. Many food truck owners also utilize social networks such as Twitter, where they can announce their location to their loyal foodies online. It is an economical business model that shouldn’t be going away anytime soon.
