Workplace diversity is an important milestone in measuring organizational culture. The greater the diversity of employees in an organization, the more open is the work culture and the willingness of people to accept different views. The converse holds equally true. A less diverse work population means a more closed organizational culture with less readiness to accept differing views. The biggest advantage of a diverse work culture is that it makes the organization more prepared to handle challenges and an uncertain global environment as insights from each diverse group leads to a more informed decision making process.

This is why diversity hiring is so critical in today’s economic environment where workplace capability can be a key competitive advantage. One of the best ways to accomplish diversity hiring goals is to use employee referrals. A study conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank proved that almost 63.5% of employees refer candidates of the same sex and more than 71.5% employees recommended candidates of the same ethnicity or race. Employee referral programs by their very nature can draw upon the connections of each diverse group of employees to add more people to the organization. If you are not already using employee referrals to drive diversity hiring, now is a good time to start. All you need to do is to change the focus of referral programs to give greater priority to referral hiring. A few tips can help you get started on this

• Set clear goals for diversity hiring within your referral program and track progress on a regular basis. Ensure diversity hiring goals are well communicated within the organization so that employees are aware of the need to refer diverse people.

• Actively seek out diverse employees with the potential to refer from within your workforce and ask them for referrals from within their community.

• Launch special reward schemes for employees referring candidates from diverse groups.

• Share diversity hiring successes by publicly appreciating and rewarding employees who have referred people from diversity groups. Ensure such successes are also communicated through company newsletters, emails, posters etc.

• Educate employees on the need for diversity hiring and how they can contribute to the same. Conduct workshops on how they can scan their connections to identify people from diverse backgrounds who can be hired.

• Launch diversity hiring campaigns and market and promote them with events, contests like the 1st 5 diversity referrals receive an all paid trip. A limited time campaign with chances to win bumper prizes can also help you get lot of referrals within a short period of time.

Lastly, anything that comes from the top is more likely to be taken seriously. So get your top management to speak about the need for employees to refer diverse candidates and you are likely to see much better diversity referrals.
