Thousands of people have been mis sold PPI policies over the last few years and many don’t even know they have been paying for cover that they don’t need or is worthless to them. You may not have even realised you had PPI cover with your loan or credit card until you checked through your paperwork after you signed the agreement papers.

There are a number of clear cases when PPI has been mis sold and is totally inappropriate for the borrower. If one of these applies to you then you need to start proceedings immediately to get your money back:

* Unemployed – if you were out of work at the time the PPI cover policy was taken out then it is likely you were mis sold this policy if it contains unemployed cover. Most polices are worthless to the unemployed as to be eligible to claim you have to have been in work at the time of taking out the policy. It is the responsibility of the lender to check your employment status before they offer you any PPI products. In most cases to be classed as employed for PPI policies you will need to be in a permanent position working for over 16 hours a week.
* Retired – as with unemployment if you are retired then many PPI policies will be worthless to you as they are designed for people in work. Also many policies have upper age limits of 65 or 70, so if you were older than this when you took out the policy then it is worthless to you and you have been mis sold PPI. Also if you have passed the age limit since taking out the policy it will most likely be invalid. The salesperson should have checked your age when discussing PPI with you.
* Self Employed – many unemployment cover policies for PPI will not cover you if your business has gone bust. You need to be very carefully taking out PPI if you are self employed.
* Existing Medical Problems – as with many insurance policies PPI typically excludes existing conditions, so a good salesperson should have thoroughly checked your health background before offering you a policy. If you do have an existing medication condition and this was not asked about when you took out the PPI it is likely this was mis sold to you.
