Drug and alcohol use on college campuses is rising across the nation. Drug use is a major problem that is starting as early as the fourth grade. Abusing alcohol and marijuana during college affects the performance of healthy young students and the statistics are staggering.

Alcohol and drug abuse is the leading cause of death in young adults between the ages of 15-24

40% of all students experiencing academic problems, abuse of alcohol

90% of college violence is happen because of drugs and alcohol

Those who drop out of college abuse alcohol

College Students who smoke marijuana and drink alcohol state they do so to relax, reduce stress, forget their problems and be one of the gang. Studies have shown that female students who contracted STD’s were intoxicated when they were infected.

Other negative consequences of “binge drinking” or taking drugs are:

Alcohol Poisoning

Death

Assault

Sexual Abuse

Suicide Attempts

For those 18 year old students just entering college can find alcohol or marijuana pretty much anywhere on campus or dorms. The tricky part in this age is that the brain that controls impulsive behavior is still immature and not to its full capacity. So when they get intoxicated they tend to do more risk taking activities such as driving, swimming and sexual activity

Intoxication from those “wild campus parties” will affect the cognitive functions (memory, concentration, and attention) for 48 hours. Alcohol abuse affects learning and long term memory. “Sleeping it off” after a binge affects the sleep cycle and can lead to increased anxiety, irritability and jumpiness.

Marijuana use at night has also been shown to affect the sleep cycle much in the same way as alcohol. It suppresses neuronal activity in the hippocampus thereby affecting concentration, attention and memory. The THC in marijuana affects the part of the brain that regulates balance, coordination and reaction time. This also affects participation in sports, driving, learning and engaging in complicated tasks. Studies have shown that the percentage of automobile accidents involve marijuana usage.

Some physical consequences for students abusing drugs and alcohol are:

The sleep cycle is impaired

Short-term memory is impaired

Increases heart rate and blood pressure

Can lead to psychotic episodes

According to studies that were conducted with college administrators are aware of the increase in alcohol and marijuana use, but most put that problem at the bottom of their list of priorities. They feel that it is the student's responsibility.
