One had to fix the furniture on the ship. The reason for that is that the ship never did remain stable. There never was much space for permanently installed beds so a hammock was used. In fact a hammock is much more comfortable to sleep in than any other bed.
In 1957 the royal navy officially adopted hammocks. These were usually used for sailors who slept on the gun decks. Due to shortage of space there was no room for a permanent bunk. A hammock rather swung in such a manner to the movement of the ship that the occupant was safe from falling from it. The fall for sailors would be of about 5 to 6 feet. This was not a compromise rather it was an improvement as a hammock provided a much more comfortable sleep than a bunk.
Sailors often got injured before this adoption to the naval. There have been incidents reporting deaths of sailors due to these falls. A hammock has also been used in space crafts. During the Apollo program there was a shortage of space. For that reason the lunar module was equipped with a hammock for each astronaut. These days a hammock would be available in different types.
These days however they have become more of a fashion thing. There are hammock chairs available in the market as well. These are sometimes also used as hammock swings.
