This feature, coupled with the increasingly sensitive information people store in their computers goes to show that we are all exposed to potential hackers and insane individuals looking to spread viruses. That is why you need to take a closer look at your computer’s security level. While employing security measures such as anti-virus programs goes without saying, there is always room for improvement. The tips below are easy and cost effective steps you can take in order to improve your computer’s security.
Always update your security programs
All computers must have anti-virus programs. Not having one is like a bank without cameras and security guards. More importantly, enable the auto update mechanism of your anti-virus program. A large chunk of malware originates from your browser and file sharing programs. To avoid this, make sure that you update and patch the operating system, browser and any other related software frequently. In fact, use auto update if possible. Before using your favorite browser, make sure its security level is set at the highest possible level. Also install a personal firewall. Many home routers offer different kinds of firewall services but it is always better to provide extra protection by adding a personal firewall yourself.
Don’t be too trusting in the internet
Do not, under any circumstance, open unknown email attachments from unknown senders as these may contain viruses. Even though the attachment is sent by a legitimate entity or company, still do not open them. Also, be extremely suspicious of files from people you know that seem a little off and out of their character. When in doubt, do not download these files.
Moreover, never click on pop-up advertisements as they often contain spyware. You can prevent this by enabling the pop-up blocker of your browser. If somehow the pop-up windows continue to find their way in, simply close the window by clicking the close button on the right hand corner of the window. Never click inside the window regardless of what it says because this would lead you to where the advertisement wants you to go.
Take extra precautionary measures
The aforementioned tips can already save you from the disasters of a computer virus, but it’s not a bad idea to take extra security measures. Consider disconnecting your computer from the internet or any other networking program when you are not using it. This is practical and it further decreases the chances of your computer getting affected. Also, keep backups of important information and files, and keep them in a safe place separate from your computer. It’s easy to do; just burn all your essential files into a CD and store them elsewhere. To top it all off, consider making an emergency disk or have an extra hard drive ready in case your computer is compromised by malware. This would really give you peace of mind. GP
