The Different Systems

The first is known as a “batch heater” and it is the basic cylindrical black heater that you see on the roof most often. The cylinder contains water; the sun warms it up, and it is ready to use. This system is best used during the summer, and many people drain it in winter as it becomes less effective.
The second system is the “Thermo syphon” system which is also passive like the batch heater except it has a collector below the water tank. It uses convection to transfer heated water from the collector into the storage tank.
The next system is known as “direct forced circulation”, it is a Thermo syphon system with a controller and pump added for additional control.
Finally, we have the “drainback” system which has a tank and a heat exchanger added so that water in the collector and water lines can drain into it when the pump is turned off. This ensures that no water is left in the collector so that it cannot freeze in winter. This system is kept apart from the household water supply; it needs a heat exchanger to transfer heat from the collector water into the domestic water.
Climates that experience freezing conditions also have antifreeze systems that prevent the water from freezing inside the collector.
