Expanding Foam Guns
Expanding foam (Polyurethane foam) is a closed cell foam which offers excellent sound and heat insulation. Slow rise formulas are most commonly used for home DIY projects and these expand to around 8 to 1. Expanding foam is ideal for plugging holes, cavities and gaps which cause drafts and heat loss. Foam guns make it easier to apply this type of product, especially when you are working in cramped conditions. Expanding foam canisters do often come with their own applicators but these can be difficult to use and do not provide the best control over the product during application. You can fit these canisters easily into your foam gun and simply replace them when they run out. When you use a foam gun the trigger will enable you to apply a very firm, even pressure. This allows the expanding foam to be dispensed evenly and smoothly. This is important as expanding foam is very adhesive and will stick to most surfaces. Once it has dried it is very difficult to remove and so you need to make sure you have full control during the application process so that it only goes where you want it to. Always wear gloves when you are using foam guns to prevent any expanding foam getting on your skin.
Silicone Sealant Guns
You can use the same gun for both expanding foam and kitchen sealant if you want to, but it is a good idea to buy two separate ones so you do not get the products mixed up. Accurate application is even more important with silicone sealant as this product is used not only as a sealer but also as a cosmetic finish to bathrooms and kitchens. Silicone sealant is used to seal gaps between the wall and baths, sinks and worktops. This not only prevents water and food from building up but also creates a very professional finish to these areas. Foam guns make it much easier to apply these products quickly and effectively. The gun allows you to squeeze out a very even flow of sealant and this helps to prevent unnecessary mess or wastage. Silicone sealant is also very adhesive so you do want to make sure you are only applying it to the area you want to seal. It can be difficult to remove from other surfaces once it has dried. You should also wear gloves when applying silicone sealant to avoid getting any on your hands as you work.
