The largest clinical study on growth hormone replacement began with the troubles of one man. In 1992, at the age of forty-two, Dr Edmun Chein, a rehabilitation specialist by training, felt as thought he was rapidly going downhill. He was gaining weight and already had a huge potbelly; his cardiovascular risk factors like elevated cholesterol and triglycerides were in the danger zone, and worst of all he had started to have chest pain. His cardiologist confirmed his worst fears, telling him that his coronary artery was blocked and that any day he might have a heart attack. Chein decided to try a far less conventional approach. As a physical medicine and rehabilitation medicine specialist, he had used hormone replacement therapy in people whose endocrine glands had been damaged as a result of injury. He had watches as people given testosterone and human growth hormone regained function without adverse side effects. He had also read Dr. Rudmans study in 1990 with tremendous interest and stored it in the back of his head.

He went to a fellow physician who found that his levels of growth hormone, testosterone, thyroid hormone, and Dhea were all low. Chein replaced all four hormones to the point of a twenty year-old and within six months, Chein had his answer. “His chest pains stopped, his cholesterol and triglycerides become normal, and he started losing his big belly”. Cheins doctor was so impressed that he decided to put himself on hormone replacement therapy. Soon he was noticing the same “miraculous changes” in himself, according to Chein.
