Stress can be a good and bad thing. In fact, it is likely that all of the members in your family have felt stressed at some point, but not all people show it in the same way. The things that cause stress are commonly known as stressors, and can be something as little as catching a cold.

Here are some other common stressors:

* change in your daily routine
* change in your health
* going to a new school
* divorce or separation of parents
* winning an award
* taking a test
* death of a relative
* imagining or fearing changes/worrying
* pushing your body too hard
* relationships and peers
* overload - school, work, competitive activities

Many of these stressors can come at the same time for your teens and young adults, and they can seem difficult to overcome at that age. The thing is, too much stress may have a negative effect on your or your teen’s body and mind, so it is important to counter this stress with relaxation and fun.

Look out for these signs in your family members that may identify stress:

* Headaches
* Nervousness and/or anxiety attacks
* Skin rashes
* Stomach aches and/or irritable bowel
* Fast heartbeat
* Perspiration
* Increased urination
* Inability to study, lack of concentration
* Carelessness or forgetfulness
* Boredom
* Anger
* Drop in school performance
* Nightmares
* Feeling sad and depressed

Talking to your teenager about stress may let them know that you recognise the pressure they are facing, and that they have a solid family unit to support them. Here are some suggestions that you can give to your teens, or even use to calm yourself down in stressful situations. If your teen continues to feel stressed, you could seek family counselling advice from a trained specialist.

Techniques for managing stress:

* Talk to a person you feel comfortable with
* Take deep breaths and practice deep breathing
* Find time to relax and chill out
* Exercise daily and eat healthily
* Get enough sleep and rest
* Learn to laugh at yourself
* Feel proud of your accomplishments
* Prepare for tests early
* Take one thing at a time
* Set realistic goals
* Forgive yourself and others
* Get involved in fun activities
* Do something for others
