HIV” & “AIDS” are very well-known terms in today’s world compared to just a couple of decades ago by the virtue of the available study material, knowledge gleaned from research and measures taken by countries and organizations to combat and manage affected cases. However, while the overall health implications linked to HIV and AIDS are well understood, but still very few people know the correlation between a person’s oral health and HIV.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). The virus can be passed from one person to another through blood (infected needles or transfusions), sexual contact or from the infected individual to the fetus/child in cases of pregnant and lactating women. AIDS occurs when the HIV infection has weakened one's immune system to the point that it is rendered incapable of protecting the body against infections, thus the individual becomes extremely susceptible to all sorts of weakening illnesses.
Dental Concerns & AIDS
Surprisingly, dental problems such as sore bleeding gums, herpes sores in the mouth and fungal and yeast infections may be among the first signs of AIDS. White spots or unusual blemishes on the tongue, in the mouth or in the throat are also frequently seen in such cases. HIV Infection can especially occur when an individual’s oral cavity have cuts, lesions etc which can provide a convenient gateway to the virus during contact through saliva or even through entry into the bloodstream. Obviously, since these infections do occur in the general population as well, one has to be tested for HIV infection and watch out for other symptoms as per a healthcare professional’s guidance to conclude that they are indeed infected. Do bear in mind that many people who are infected with HIV still do not have any symptoms of AIDS at all for many years. So even if the test is positive, one shouldn’t assume that AIDS has set in until diagnosed by a medical practitioner.
HIV at the Dental Center…
Due to the nature of dental care & treatment, many people fear that HIV may be transmitted during treatment. Responsible dental clinics or dental care centers as well as standalone practitioners are therefore expected to take reasonable precautions to eliminate any such possibility.
These precautions require dentists to wear gloves, face masks and to sterilize all hand pieces (drills) and other dental instruments for every patient using strict and specific sterilization procedures. Generally after each patient visit gloves are discarded, hands are washed and a new pair of gloves is used for the next patient. By taking such simple steps, one is assured of a safe and infection-free dental checkup & treatment. So please keep in mind that your dental care center also adheres to these norms. If not, speak up-you have every right to get the care you deserve!
