Protecting the environment is one of my favorite subjects lately. Whether I choose to consume less water, replace the classic light bulbs with more economical ones or ride the bicycle to the grocery store instead of taking my car, I believe that we can contribute in a small measure to the Green movement. One of my concerns in this direction was the selection of a new indoor heater.

I wasn't sure what to choose because I didn't wanted to consume too much electricity but also wanted it to be ecologically friendly. After doing some research over the internet, I found that the most popular types of heaters are the indoor propane heaters and the infrared indoor heaters. In case you are dealing with the same dilemma, let's analyze the pros and cons of each type:

I. Infrared indoor heaters are very efficient, they are safe and they will not overcharge your electricity bill.

Some say that an infrared indoor heater will even save you up to 50% on your home heating bills. If you live somewhere where winters are long, cold and harsh, you will need more than the average central heating system. Personally, I use an infrared indoor heater in my baby girl's room during extra cold nights, with howling winter winds. I just place it in the middle of the room and I let it do its job, meaning maintaining an optimum temperature for the baby's needs. This type of heater is great because unlike the traditional electric heater, it heats evenly the room, thus eliminating the variations of temperature that no one likes.

Infrared indoor heaters also maintain the right humidity level and you will not wake up with a dry nose.
They are silent, portable and energy efficient, which puts them in the top of preferences when it comes to eco-friendly indoor heaters.

II.The propane indoor heater is very effective when it comes to heating the house during power failures.

When such situations occur, the electrical heaters are useless, regardless if we are talking about infrared heaters, classic electrical heaters or forced convection air heaters. However, get ready to purchase a 20 or 100 pound tank of propane gas, because it fuels the heater. Some people prefer to have a propane indoor heater in case of emergency, when electricity is down. You can store it in the shed and take it our whenever you need some extra heat. Propane gas heaters come in many shapes and sizes, so you can choose the one that matches your needs and house surface. However, you need to consider the security issues attached to buying a propane indoor heater:

Use them in a well ventilated area to prevent the accumulation of carbon monoxide. If the room is not properly ventilated, occupants can be asphyxiated due to oxygen depletion.
Using a propane gas fueled heater can also cause explosions, in case there are cracks or gas spills.

However, modern propane heaters have built in safety features, such as oxygen depletion sensors or automatic shutdown features in case of malfunction.
