Once the glory days on the football turf have ended along with the adoration of cheerleaders and screams of fans, what’s a thrice-crowned Super Bowl Most Valuable Player to do? If you’re football legend Joe Montana, known for record-breaking yardage, touchdown and passes, you parlay your fame, bank and perseverance into becoming a businessman, TV pitchman, winemaker and sports analyst.

In the last decade, the former star quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers has been hustling as much off-field as much as he did on the field. When he’s not making deals and networking, Montana, who was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2000, has been drinking a little wine that he made himself from grapes grown on his Napa Valley estate.

Joe Montana, Vintner

After retiring in 2004 and moving to a Calistoga, California estate he dubbed “Villa Montana,” the former NFLer began growing grapes to make cabernet and other wines. His commercial wine brand is a permutation of his last name: Montagia. His signature red varietal? A deep amethyst concoction named “Cabernet Sauvignon Montagia.”

Fans who haven’t stocked up on bottles for posterity, however, are out of luck. In 2010, Montana decided to put the wine country estate up for sale and move back to his beloved football base: San Francisco.

Coming Home

Joe Montana is synonymous with San Francisco, and when he decided to put roots back down in the city, he chose to live in the city's premiere high-rise The Millennium Tower. The building is in the SoMa/Financial district of San Francisco and is the tallest residential building in the city. It was designed for luxury living and the management company strives to make the building a vertical community – one where neighbors get together to network and socialize. Montana and his wife Jennifer are the heart of those social gatherings at The Millennium Tower, hosting fundraisers, parties and networking events for the Millennium community. .

Hotel Magnate

In summer 2011, Joe Montana won a bid to bring a luxury hotel to Santa Clara after researching and finding international interest in the project. Where will the real estate investment be? Right next to a brand-new stadium that’s being erected for his former football team. Paying further homage to the San Francisco 49ers, Montana is executing the project with former team owner and now business partner Eddie DeBartolo.

The stadium-hotel site in Santa Clara, California is set to anchor a destination area that will be adjacent to a Great America amusement park. Montana has detailed plans to include a sports-themed bar and restaurant in the hotel project, set to debut in 2015, just in time for the new 49ers stadium to open.

In his spare time, he also gives unpaid commentary for various sports shows and sports magazines.
