Keeping Your Resumes Organized

Whether you have one single resume or ten of them, it is important to keep all of these resumes of yours in order. Your resume must be easily accessible. Say you are applying for jobs online, don’t waste 15 minutes or more trying to find your resume in that one folder that you saved it to but can’t remember the name of. As for printed resumes, these too should be easily accessible while in the mist of a job search. Why? You never know when you’ll come across a job opening.

Keeping the Resumes You Already Sent Organized

Wait a minute! You already sent the resume right? Yep. So why does it need to be organized? It is not uncommon for some job seekers to apply for 50 or 100 jobs! Can you really keep all that information organized in your head? Maybe, but it will be hard. By keeping track of which resumes you sent out, you avoid any potentially embarrassing mistakes. For example, you lessen the chances of you “accidentally” applying for the same job three times.

So say you were able to keep your resumes easily accessible and you only applied for a job once. Great! You are on the right track, but all your hard work will fall flat if you miss a job interview or show up late. As you know, these actions are usually deal breakers. That is why keeping all upcoming interview dates and times is another important way for you to keep your job search organized.

You now have an idea of which aspects of your job search you should try to keep organized, but how can you go about staying organized? Here are some helpful suggestions:

Your Resumes: We often apply for jobs online via email, meaning a digital copy of your resume should be stored on your computer. Give it its own folder titled “resumes.” As for your printed resume, keep a few copies in your car or briefcase (remember you never know when you will come across a job opportunity).

Your Already Sent Resumes: The best way to stay aware of the jobs you already applied for is to keep a running list. This list can be done on your computer or with a simple notebook and pen. Basically, write down the company name, job title, and when you applied for the job. If a job listing sounds too familiar, check with your list to ensure you haven’t already applied.

Your Job Interviews: The easiest way to keep this aspect of your job search organized is to rely on a good old fashioned calendar. Mark down the dates and times of upcoming job interviews. Also, if you use a smart phone with a build-in calendar, you can set your phone to provide you with reminders as well.
