IT consultants manage and do various jobs like estimating, implementing, deploying, managing and most importantly administering the information technology systems of their clients. The qualities which a person must possess to become a successful information technology consultant are as follows. The pre requisite qualities for the job are advisory talent to give correct advice to client which is based on solid facts gathered from researches and surveys, excellent communication skills to convey their ideas precisely and accurately so that they are easily understood by the client, technical skills so the IT consultant himself has the knowledge of the field before he starts consulting others about it, business skills to secure a deal and management skills to provide solutions to the client on time, in the agreed price range and also, ensure the satisfaction of the customer.

There are five basic rules of thumb in this information technology consulting business. First, you must focus on the relationship with the client. Understand him and his business. Second is to have a very clearly and accurately defined role so that there is no confusion at later stages. And IT consultant should visualize success because you can achieve it only when you see it. Having no hope or faith never helps. Fourth point is that you should always remember that your job is to provide the best advice, only. Whether your client chooses to use it and implement it, it’s entirely his decision and you should gladly leave it to him or her. Fifth point is to remember to be result oriented. As the saying goes that nothing succeeds like success. One happy client can give you ten potential clients in future.
