From matte to a high gloss finish, there are different levels of sheen and aggregate exposed on polished concrete floors. These amount of aggregate and level of sheen on polished concrete floors depend on the diamond grit used to polish the concrete floor. According to the Concrete Polishing Association of America, the gloss levels of polished concrete in Kansas City is classified broadly as A, B, C, and D depending on the diamond grit used. Here is a brief review of the different levels of sheen and aggregate exposure on polished concrete floors.
Level 1
This level 1 also referred to as 'flat' ground polish will look slightly hazy when looking directly down at the floor. By halting below the 100 grit resin bond, this look can be achieved and will have very little if any reflection or clarity.
Level 2
By halting at the 400 grit resin bond, this level two polishes has a honed appearance and results in a low gloss finish. When you look directly down at such types of flooring, the floor will expose a very slight reflection which can also be seen from a distance of about 100 feet. Also called as 'Satin', this finish results in a low luster matte appearance.
Level 3
When compared to level 1 and level 2 polishes, the level three semi-polished surface has got a lot more shine. This gloss finish is obtained by using an 800 grit or greater diamond abrasive. With this sheen level, you will begin to see a decent reflection of light on the surface. The floor will reflect overhead and side lighting clearly, even if you view 30 to 50 feet from the floor.
Level 4
Level 4 finish provides a high level of polish and hence called as 'highly-polished' level. When looking directly down the polished surface, you can see your own reflection with total clarity. Moreover, the floor may also appear to be wet while looking from different angles. To achieve this level of sheen, a 3,000 grit resin bond diamond and a high-speed burnisher with specifically outfitted buffing pads are typically used.
Levels of Aggregate Exposure
With a low level of exposure, class A aggregate exposures appear as a cream color whereas class D has a large aggregate exposure of up to ΒΌ of an inch. But remember, due to the very small amount being cut from the surface, these cream blemished does not remove surface blemishes or existing imperfection in the concrete. Also, while class D aggregate exposure is visually appealing, it's harder to achieve and increase costs due to possible pits or divots being exposed.
