In simple words we can define slope as a ratio of the rise divided by the run between two points of the line. Lets take two points on line and define slope for it: let the two points are x1, y1 and x2, y2 and m is the slope of line,
m = y2 – y1/ x2 – x1. This is also called as the slope formula . With the help of differentiation calculus you can calculate the slope of the tangent line to a curve at point.
Let's take an example to understand how to use the slope formula: In the slope of the line segment joining the points (1,-5) and (-5, 2).
in this question x1 = 1, y1 = -5, x2= -5 and y2 = 2. to calculate the slope we put the above values in the slope formula
m = y2-y1/ x2- x1
m = 2 -(-5) / (-5) -1,
m = 2+ 5 / -6,
m = 7/ -6,
m = -(7/6)
