Both of these actions need memory, but one needs long term and the other one needs short term for quick access. The more quickly a device can access its memory, the speedier that device will be.
Consider the number of electronics you use every day and you'll see how significant they are in our society. We would not be able to function nearly as efficiently if this technology did not exist. Memory in some form is used by almost every piece of electronic gadgetry that we own. View them as a slightly different type of computer helping us to live our lives more efficiently.
