Eyes are the most complicated, delicate and sensitive organs of the human body. If any other limbs are damaged then at least you can see around yourself and find the things you want to fetch. If your eyes are gone you can do nothing. Even after having all the limbs and a well-built body, you can not proceed to work. Medical science regarding eyes has developed much further. One problem remained unsolved for many years. It was how to improve a person’s vision who is having some problem in seeing either the near or the far view. Specs came to exist from this point. Another break through inventions in human history was the invention of contact lenses. Contact lenses are proved to be much useful than specs as it is not normally affected by wet weather, steam and provide a wider vision.
Contact lenses in other name are also known as contact. This lens usually is placed over cornea to correct the vision. The first idea of contact lenses was brought forward by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1508. Like his many prodigal concepts left its marks on various inventions of science and master piece works of arts, he also first in the human history drew a diagram of contact lenses and outlined its usefulness. In 1801 scientist Thomas Young prepared a kind of ‘eyecup’. At the base of the said device he fitted a microscopic eyepiece. However, it did not become much fruitful and popular as it could not correct refraction errors. Still this is considered as the predecessor of today’s contact lenses.
Sir John Herschel, in his Encyclopedia Metropolitana, edition in the year 1845 told of a concept to get a mould of real cornea. He further explained that if the mould then is impressed over some sort of transparent medium then it would provide a proper shape which would fit over cornea. Based on that concept with necessary corrections Dr Dallos first manufactured lenses taking the mould from the living eye and thus the first contact lenses were created. Later in 1887 German physiologist Adolf Eugen Fick constructed first successful contact lens. This lens was to be fitted properly over cornea of human eye. In his laboratory in Zurich in Switzerland, he first tried the lenses on rabbits, then on himself and later on a group of volunteer.
But, Fick’s lenses had some draw backs also. They were large, heavy and could be put on for only few hours and not for longer time. In 1888 another German technologist August Muller manufactured his own lenses and corrected his own myopia.
Like all breakthrough inventions in science and technology, day by day the first outcome has become more up to date and more sophisticated giving out today’s results as seen in case of cars and aeroplanes.
