Meenakari The complex art of enamelling made in the true Indian way!

The Mughals are credited with originally inventing the art of enamelling that is locally called Meenakari. They then passed on the legacy to others and particularly to the Rajput crafts persons who have perfected the craft over the centuries and now their work is acknowledged for its finesse and efficacy the world over. Meenakari done jewellery ornaments are many and are now produced all over the country. Meenakari kadas or bangles are the favourite of males and females and the changing times have brought with them new designs and patterns.

This particular technique of enamelling was not known to Indians. But the advent of Mughals changed all that. The Mughals, to their credit not only passed on the knowledge to the eager Indian counterparts but also extended all possible support to its growth.

Enamelling is the very complex technique that involves adding or fusing different pieces of metal surfaces and also including colouring. It is easily and unarguably the most vital part in the all important activity of decorating jewellery ornaments.

Today, of course, it is a widely practised technique that is known to many crafts persons across the length and breadth of this country. West Bengal and Rajasthan are important centres where countless Meenakari toil the year around to give us these precious ornaments with meenakari written all around them.

West Bengal and Rajasthan are where the action is!

Particularly, the Meenakari kadas handcrafted in West Bengal deserve a special mention. While previously Meenakari used to be done only on gold and silver, now, it is also done on gem stones and other metals. Besides kadas and bangles, other ornaments like necklaces, bracelets, etc are also done with enamelling done on them following this traditional method.

Incredibly enough, these Meenakars have got engraved floral designs, bird and animal life and scenes from royal life and also every day life on these kadas. Meenakari kadas are traditionally worn by women only with the males preferring the more staid and simple ones. Sometimes the gents have specially designed kadas made for themselves on order. They give the concerned artisans specific instructions as to how they want their kadas to look like and the crafts persons make it accordingly.

Meenakari kadas are not highly priced!

Despite this level of enamelling done on them, these handcrafted kadas do not burn a big hole in your pockets. The prices are all within manageable limits only. What is more, the artisans get to earn a good profit if more people buy them. If you look at the extent of work done on these handmade products the prices are next to nothing.
