Usually reserved for weddings and a quick holiday destination for North Americans, Mexico has opened its sandy shores and become more accessible to us Brits. Once thought too far for one week and too expensive to go for two, airlines have dropped their prices and made this glorious tropical paradise an option for a romantic get away or family holiday.

Everyone has their own opinion of what Mexico should be, whether it’s laying on the white beaches surrounded by palm trees, dancing the night away at a traditional Guadalajara nightclub, taking a crazy cab ride through chaotic Mexico City, or surrounding yourself with the intense jungle. This is such a large country that

captures your imagination and takes you on a journey through the senses.

Merida, on the Gulf of Mexico coast is considered the cultural capital of the peninsula. It’s has colonial history seeping from every nook and cranny. With the regions best museums, large plazas and narrow streets. A great alternative and a short flight away from the ever-popular beach resort Cancun.

If traveling to Mexico is your first trip outside of the developed world, be prepared to be barraged by more noise, crowds, heat and poverty than you’re used to. The crime rate here is widely advertised as being immense, but if you remain vigilant and heed the advice given by your travel operator, your holiday is bound to go without a hitch.

The locals will make you feel very welcome and you can give a lot in return, simply by learning a few phrases in Spanish before you arrive.

As previously mentioned, Cancun is the destination of choice for most holidaymakers seeking a bargain beach holiday to Mexico. It’s not difficult to see why. With its azure blue sea and powder soft white sand, it is perfect for relaxing, cocktail in hand or for building sandcastles. It is, as you may expect, more ‘touristy’ than some of Mexico’s other coastal destinations. It is most definitely a party town. Born in the 1970’s as an alternative to Acapulco, the little fishing town has taken on a life of it’s own, and now serves as many as 4 million visitors each year.

Due to the peso’s exchange rate against the dollar, your pound will go a long way in Mexico. So, not only are the prices more reasonable to reach this fabulous destination, it is also an affordable country to travel in. In fact, I have laughed when returning travelers come out with the phrase “You can get that for…. in Mexico”.

Direct flights to Cancun are available from many UK airports and direct flights from London take an average of 11 hours.

It seems that in Mexico you really can have it all, and now that it is no longer just the playground of North American’s on vacation or the wealthy elite, we should savour being able to have it all.
