Now many people are aware of an advance technology i.e UPS, also referred as uninterruptible power supplies. However, some people are still don't know about its usage and benefits, therefore here is some general information about uninterruptible power supplies and how they work.

An uninterruptible power supply is a system that supplies electric power to device when suddenly the electricity fails. You can call it as backup batteries. But uninterruptible power supplies are unlike other batteries because its output is alternating current (AC), not direct current (DC). Basically, the purpose of using a UPS device is to provide you some time to save your important file or work on your computer system or to allow you to continue your work until the generator sets to turn on.

The UPS device is somewhat different from a standby generator. People use standby generators to supply electricity when the main line gets disconnect, but these generators are not instantly available. These machines take at least 10 to 15 seconds to give a stable electricity. This interruption may be enough to execute your important work. The uninterruptible power supply is thus more useful in devoting efforts to this interruption. It can truly provide uninterrupted power that may range from 5 to 30 minutes. It is therefore necessary to be aware always while saving your work if you are working with computer devices as soon as you come to know about a power interruption.

It can also be said that a UPS performs as a mediator between the main supply and your device. You just need to connect your device to the uninterruptible power supply which has to be connect to the main power network. The uninterruptible power supply receives the alternating current as input, then save it in a battery and finally rectifies it to DC. When the UPS detects that there is power interruption, it automatically inverts the saved power to the alternating current. This results in powering your device.

Some electrical machines like desktop computers, include built-in adaptors in their power supply that converts the alternating current (input) to direct current (output). But this power supply can't save any power. The conversion is possible if it is connected to the main electricity line.
