Holiday season weddings are special; they lend themselves to warm feelings among family and friends. These weddings are more festive than somber and provide opportunities for colourful embellishment and rich foods that warmer season weddings do not. That said, there are also special considerations for holiday weddings that must be taken into account – like booking the photographer early!

Christmas and New Year are magical times to plan a wedding. Friends and family are gathered and festive feelings permeate the air all around. There is no better time of year to plan a wedding than during this wonderful holiday time and the holidays lend themselves to some fabulous color and photography themes. Because the holidays are a busy time, often planned in advance, it pays to be extra prepared with early invitations and planning for catering and wedding photography.
The Holiday Wedding Banquet
A New Year wedding banquet can be a cinch to create because the lateness of the event will allow for creative but smaller supper dishes. For the bride and groom wanting to rein in costs an appetizer buffet will even suffice; perhaps wontons, savouries, vegetable trays, fruit and cheese plates, and other things that are easy to eat standing up. You may be able to save on the New Year wedding buffet but you will want to offer a full bar with a lot of champagne.
The Christmas buffet on the other hand can be hot and wholesome with big platters of roast meats and all the wonderful Christmas garnishes and flourishes of the festive season. Wonderful Christmas buffet ideas may include: pâté served with red onion on toast, prawn cocktail with apple and breaded garlic mushrooms with sour cream for the hors d'oeuvres and for the main course of course roast turkey served with seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing and Yorkshire pudding. For a fabulous winter dessert consider brie, almond and apple crumble or Christmas mince pies and a selection of cakes.
Christmas Wedding Colors
Red and white are gorgeous wedding colors and considered very lucky for the bride in many parts of the world so why not go with it? Red is flattering, elegant and oh so festive. Poinsettias to grace the tables and for the bride a white or red dress will be stunning. For those that want to retain the tradition of a white dress, try embellishing the gown with a long red cape. Or embrace the trend of color in wedding dresses by adding a beautiful red silk sash to the waist of the gown. You could also seek a dress with lots of sparkly beads and sequins to evoke the snowiness of the season. And of course, a faux-fur wrap and muff are fun, retro and very classy. These are great looks for the wedding photographer to capture creatively and to work with in terms of background and flourish.
Holiday Wedding Themes
The holiday wedding theme will likely be different depending on whether this is a Christmas wedding or a New Year wedding. For Christmas, complement poinsettias with candles in red and gold. Red is a great color but it isn’t the only Christmas wedding option available. Other super options might be silver and white; silver and light blue; burgundy, forest green or gold and cream. The latter also make fabulous New Year Wedding/Party colors.
Holiday Wedding Photography
There are two key things you must remember and these are to book the wedding photographer early to avoid disappointment and secondly, hire a wedding photographer with reputation and experience. Holiday wedding photography will pose unique challenges for the wedding photographer and it is of paramount importance that your wedding photographer has experience shooting weddings in different temperatures and under a variety of circumstances. Once you have that sorted, it’s time to deck the halls with brides and grooms!
