Nokia E6 combines a touch screen with a QWERTY, Microsoft mobile apps, free GPS navigation and real-time emails - all in an ultra compact smartphone.
Nokia has launched the new E6, and it seems that consumers really have an alternative to the Blackberry smartphones, which have seen a meteoric increase in popularity, particularly among the youth. Does the E6 have that punch?

Build & Ergonomics

The slimness and the solid feel offered by the E6 when you grip it are impressive. The looks are typical business phone-ish, and what seems to be a real value add is that the 2.46-inch display is capacitive touchscreen.

While the E6 is slightly on the heavier side, but then again at 133 grams, it isn’t really too much. The Blackberry Bold 9700 steals a march on the weight front, at 122 grams.

Features

The Symbian Anna update is possibly the single most important update this phone could have received. The Anna update clearly makes a lot of difference. Major chunk of the work has gone on tweaking the UI- the icon edges are noticeably rounded, unlike the edgy ones in Symbian 3 before this update. However, performance has been worked on as well, and for the better. The phone’s response is much better than what we saw in the N8.

The E6 is powered by a 680MHz ARM 11 processor, and has 256MB of RAM. We feel that Symbian, despite the Anna update, still needs a faster processor. The E6 has 8GB built-in storage, and a microSD slot for adding up to 32GB more.

Performance

With a 680MHz processor, the Nokia E6 isn’t going to win any performance battles. However, it seems pretty capable of handling multiple open applications, and the smallish display tends to hide away any judder or stuttering that the interface may have thrown up clearly, otherwise.

The physical QWERTY keypad is an absolute delight to use. The slimness of the phone allows you to type with the same hand that is holding the phone. The number keys are integrated with the alphabet keys, and are in the center of the keypad.

The 2.46-inch display is the TFT type, with capacitive touchscreen capabilities. The resolution of 640x480 pixels is a lot more than what the immediate rivals offer, and the quality of this display is excellent. Brightness and crispness of this display is very good. The excellent touchscreen response is a real value add, over and above a really good physical QWERTY keypad.

Nokia still believes in using the small/normal/large method of changing text size. For someone with slightly troublesome eyesight, the lack of a proper font manager is a glaring omission. Blackberry and iPhones use the actual font size method (10pt, 11pt etc) setting, and users are much more comfortable with that. Nokia’s Text Magnifier app, has two major problems. First, it will only magnify certain text in the UI (and a text message isn’t one of the magnified bits!). Secondly, some of the magnified text sometimes doesn’t fit very well, where it is supposed.

The battery life offered by the E6 is very good. With mails, IM, social networks and even some more app constantly syncing in the background and the gamut of calls of SMSes, the E6 will last about 2 days. Very good, considering the fact that we have become used to pretty pathetic battery backups offered by most smartphones.

The 8MP camera on the E6 is very good. Works well even in low light conditions, and the crispness of the images is a delight. Photos will have a max size of 3264x2448 pixels. The dual LED flash does make its presence felt in low light conditions. The camera also has 720p HD video recording.

Verdict

For a price of around Rs 17k, you will get a loaded smartphone- with the touchscreen+ physical QWERTY keypad, the latest Symbian Anna OS, a sleek form factor and a very good battery life. If you aren’t looking out for the Blackberry particularly, but want a phone with a similar feature set, this may be the phone to check out.
