Taking care of your motors is the very first step in ensuring that you don’t go through more carbon brushes than you need to. It’s important to keep the entire thing in perfect working order so that you don’t spend more time with your motors down than you need to.
One of the biggest mistakes some companies when repairing motors is using lower end carbon brush options as replacement parts. This might seem like a good idea in the short term due to the fact lower initial outlay. Nevertheless, in the long run, no one is saving money since those lower end, cheap carbon brush options will wear down quickly and have to be replaced much sooner increasing maintenance costs and your overall spend.

Taking care of your motors is the very first step in ensuring that you don’t go through more carbon brushes than you need to. After all, the wear rate of the carbon brushes you use, no matter what kind they are, is directly linked to how much maintenance you perform on your motor and how regularly. It’s important to keep the entire thing in perfect working order so that you don’t spend more time with your motors down than you need to.

1.Keep an eye on your carbon brushes. – This is one part of the motor that will wear down regularly, so you want to be aware when they are going out. This will avoid any nasty surprises and allow you to plan ahead to replace them just before they will need it. Avoiding unnecessary downtime requires that you stay on top of this very basic maintenance issue. A quick sight check of the carbon brushes will suffice most of the time. Just take out the screws that hold them in place and use the motor to tap out the brushes. Then look at the ends of the brushes. If they’re curved to match the motor, you’re fine, but if they look worn down, then it’s time for new carbon brushes.

2.In some cases, you may need to use a continuity tester to check the carbon brushes. Start by disconnecting the wires, making sure to mark them as you do so. This will make it easier to put it back together. Then hold the tester clip to one of the leads and touch the probe to the other one. When you start to move the motor shaft a bit, you should see the tester light up. If it doesn’t, then it’s time for new carbon brushes.

3.When it’s time to replace the carbon brushes, look on the motor itself for a model number of the brushes you need. Of course motors do take a lot of abuse through the years, so if you aren’t sure exactly what kind you need, remove the carbon brushes and take them with you when you talk to an expert.
