Not too long ago I went to visit my father in the “Old Folk’s Home”. This is what he calls the establishment, mind you. The minimum age requirement is 55 and, according to the brochure, it is called "Independent Retirement Living".
Not too long ago I went to visit my father in the “Old Folk’s Home”. This is what he calls the establishment, mind you. The minimum age requirement is 55 and, according to the brochure, it is called "Independent Retirement Living". My dad's term is probably a better fit though, as the majority of residents are around his age of 85.

It made me happy to know that the residents' laundry facilities were now a managed laundry service. The new machines are all brand names with high tech features and are all EnergyStar efficient. You use an access card on these machines rather than coins. The cards are reloadable, and the balance may be increased by ATM card, credit card, or by check. The residents feel safer with the coinless machines because there is no money on hand to attract potential thieves.

On the rare occasion that a repair was needed, the manager, Michael, told me that he was happy with the service the company offered and also how quickly they responded to the call. There is a contract with the company for routine preventative maintenance, and that keeps the machines in great running order. Michael has a lot to do, so he is very pleased that the laundry facilities at the retirement home are taken care of.

Michael also told me how the modern features of the machines were very impressive. The thing that really impressed me is how the residents can be notified by phone alert, remote laundry monitor, or email alert when a machine becomes available. This cuts back on the number of unneeded visits to the laundry room.

The "Old Folks Home" has made many improvements which made me very happy, and I had a very nice visit that day with my father. I am so glad that my dad lives in a retirement home that cares for its residents. Changing their laundry facility to a coinless laundry system helps make one aspect of their lives easier, safer, and less worrisome.
