So you've decided to go with a Retro theme for your interior design? How do you plan to intertwine this into your home? The first thing you want to do is get a good understanding of exactly what a Retro design is.
So what exactly is Retro? The 1940’s were a wretch with war, so the fifties and sixties gravitated more towards bold bright colors. A Retro style is basically bits and pieces from the 50's, 60's, and 70's blending them in a modern interior design. There is so many accessories and materials to pick from, your final product will reflect your perspective of the past. Therefore, your design has no choice but to be totally unique.
The 50's, 60's, and 70's all contain different shapes, color, materials and other artifacts that left an influence on us all. These days, anything from these three decades is again fashionable. There are no strict guidelines to a Retro design, but it is easily recognized when discovered.
Where do I start? Well, you could start by searching on the internet and fingering through some magazines. You can also attend exhibitions and show rooms. This way you can get an idea of the type of color schemes, layouts, and furniture you like. Look at how the furniture is placed and the materials it’s made from. Consider the lighting and how it affects the room. Check out the ornaments. Also, note how the floor and wall coverings are implemented. Take what you like from each decade and create a Retro design all your own.
The 70's were full of fun and passion. Brightly colored rooms reflect this era precisely. The 60's were full of brightly colored flowers, patterns, swirls and things of that nature. This is why the 70's where more into bright colors without the patterns. As far as furniture goes, plain colors were used in contrast with the pillows and cushions. The flowers from the 60’s were a memory and metallic was the new thing.
In the 70's there was a lot of mismatching of colors. The colors of the furniture clashed, and in a lot of cases people preferred single chairs vs. three piece combos. There were also hanging chairs and floor seats that were adopted from the 60's.
In the 70's the young folks from the 60's stuck to their free spirits and maintained their unconventional lifestyle, and this is very evident in their interior designs.
Carpets were ripped up reveal beautiful parquet hardwood floors which had previously been covered, goodness only knows why! Those who didn't have parquet flooring went in the opposite direction and opted for thick shag pile carpets in white or cream irrespective of whether they were practical or not!
The people who had parquet hardwood floors exposed them by removing carpentry, and those who didn't decided to go with thick shaggy carpet. White or creams were preferred carpet colors.
