“Self-regulation is not simply a moral characteristic. It is biologically healthy for both your body and mind.”

It is easy to identify how lack of self-regulation leads to several problems. A child who hits other children or yells out of frustration will not be popular among peers and may face reprimands in school. An adult with poor self-regulation skills lack self-confidence and self-esteem and struggle to handle stress and frustration. Often, this is expressed in terms of anxiety, and in most severe cases, may be diagnosed as a mental illness.

Importance of self-regulation:

Self-regulation involves the time taken between a feeling and an action – see through things, make a plan and wait patiently. Both children and adults often struggle with these behaviors.

Learning self-regulation skills will help you to act in accordance with your social conscience or deeply help values and to express yourself in appropriate ways. Learning self-regulation skills allows us to bounce back from failure and stay calm under pressure. These two abilities will carry us throughout our life more than other skills.

If your goal is academic achievement, learning self-regulation skills allow you to study instead of slacking off before an exam. If you are willing to help others in your work, it allows you to help a co-worker with a project, even if you are on a tight deadline yourself.
