No matter what your new enterprise does, it will require a proper home workspace. If you are lucky, you have a house with a built-in office, but if you are like most of us, you have to create one for yourself. Because your office will be the heart of your new business, you want to make sure you create a space that fosters productivity.

There are some basics that are essential to any home office. Top on that list is probably the computer. Since you depend on it to help run your firm, you need a good computer. You don't have to buy the best one on the market, but it must at least be fully compatible with all the software you buy. Minimum computer requirements are 512 MB of RAM, a processor with a speed of at least 2GHz, and a 3D-enabled graphics card.

Of course, you will want a fax machine for your home office. Having a fax machine in addition to e-mail capability is a good idea for all businesses today. Consider purchasing an all-in-one machine that faxes, copies, scans, and prints, as it will save you money and space.

Your office will have to be furnished as well. Your desk should be sturdy; it must be able to accommodate your monitor and other devices. For the sake of your back, you should buy a proper desk chair since it will have to support you for many hours every day. Business information should be stored in a filing cabinet, and a shredder is a must in this age of identity theft. General office supplies such as pens and paper clips are easy to overlook, but remain essential; make sure to place them within reach on your workspace.

You are going to spend a great deal of time in your home office, so make it a comfortable and organized space. Investing in a good workstation that will support your efforts and foster productivity is well worth it.
