Specialty of Impressionist Painters

Impressionism was an art movement that was originated in the 19th century. The movement was supposed to be started by a group of artists based at Paris during the 1870s and 1880s. The impressionist paintings have inspired many artists to attempt to follow this genre of art. The secret is short brushstrokes as it is something that helps give the illusion. These impressionist painters attempted to break away from the traditional subject matter, technique and composition of painting and tried to create their own unique style.

Unlike conservative painters who focused on portraying dramatic and historical scenes of idealized beauty and religious meaning, the impressionist painters chose ordinary scenes from everyday life as the subject matter. They put emphasis on capturing reality and their paintings include nature and people. Nature was elevated to become the subject of the painting rather than a backdrop for another scene as was the case in traditional art. In painting landscapes, the Impressionist artists tried to put on canvas what they saw in front of them without idealization. They often made a seemingly ordinary part of nature. As regards people, impressionist’s artists were interested in portraying people in everyday and informal situations like: the middle class during leisure time activities in parks, gardens or at the seaside and rural people at work.

As far as the colors of the paintings are concerned the Impressionists distanced themselves from the somber tones of earlier paintings. They generally avoided the use of black and earth colors and used light, vibrant colors to give their paintings luminosity and to capture the changing effect of sunlight on the scenes they painted. In order to convey the movement and changing nature of a passing moment, the painters used quick, broken brushstrokes that were left without any further smoothing. This method allows the viewer to clearly see the traces of the brush and gives impressionist paintings an unfurnished appearance.

The Impressionist artists often worked outdoors, not in a studio so that they can be be close with nature and to be able to directly observe the effects of changing sunlight, weather and movement. They opened their style to experimenting and broke the traditional rules of composition.
