Sperm is generally donated via a sperm bank or clinic and each country and each state in a particular country may have different regulations and restrictions governing the sperm donor. In some states, the donor can opt to remain anonymous and give up or retain his rights and responsibilities.
The donation of his sperm by a man also known as a sperm donor is usually for the purpose to make a woman, who is not necessarily his sexual partner, pregnant. Sometimes, in couples, the sperm from the male partner may be lacking in number and mobility and are incapable of fertilizing the egg released by the woman. Or the female may have blockages in her tubes preventing the egg from reaching the uterus. Or lesbian couples who want to have the experience of bringing up a child. These couples, who are desirous of having a child but since the woman cannot achieve pregnancy due to whatever reason, will find solace in sperm from the sperm donor.
Sperm is generally donated via a sperm bank or clinic and each country and each state in a particular country may have different regulations and restrictions governing the sperm donor. In some states, the donor can opt to remain anonymous and give up or retain his rights and responsibilities. Infertile couples and single women can select the sperm donor according to their own likes on grounds of personality, looks, race, educational abilities, and other factors. Some sperm banks do not divulge the complete information of their donors to potential recipients and this is probably the reason why some of them choose to use a known person or sperm from a private clinic.
Normally, the sperm from sperm donors is used on the woman by artificial insemination in a clinic through intra-cervical insemination (ICI) or intrauterine insemination (IUI). The sperm can also be prepared for other assisted reproductive methods e.g. IVF. These sperms can also be used for surrogacy pregnancies by implanting the embryos created with the fertilization of sperms with an egg from the donor or the woman undergoing surrogacy. When there are spare embryos, they can be frozen for later use when the first few implantations do not succeed.
The sperm donor can donate his sperm in a sperm bank for a contractual period of time that can vary from six months to two years. This period is fixed after measuring the number of pregnancies the bank wants to carry out. Normally, there are fixed periods and place of donation and the number of donations that can be accepted by the bank. For this an agreement is drawn out and signed by both parties and strictly adhered to. In case, the donor has acquired a sexual infection, he has to notify the bank. In most cases, the donor cannot have sexual intercourse or masturbate for up to three days before a sperm donation is made.
