Many veterans, after returning home, continue the abuse, for the fear of being stigmatized with a mental illness. This abuse of drugs and alcohol may be driven by feelings of guilt, isolation and to cope with unpleasant memories. The veterans who also are suffering from PTSD have a higher risk of drug abuse and addiction. Finding the best substance abuse program can be a challenge for vets. Experts say that many combat veterans are more likely to turn to drug use after leaving the military. The suicide rate for veterans is three times higher than the general public. Mental toughness and physical endurance are emphasized in all branches of the military. Seeking mental treatment is perceived as weakness and the thought that veterans can “fix their own” problems still prevails among military cultures. There are many drug addiction recovery centers that specialize in co-occurring disorders. Among veterans, 18 and older, 8% were dependent on or abused illicit drugs and alcohol. Of the 8% only 0.8% received treatment for addiction or co-occurring disorders. There are also private programs that are tailored to veterans. Most use the same techniques as government programs, but include alternative therapies that VA programs may not offer. Some even accept payments from VA insurance. There is also the issue of privacy. Many veterans avoid seeking treatment from a VA-based program for the fear that it will go on their service record or they will run into someone they know.
