Combine the pleasure of time spent outdoors with an exercise that can be enjoyed by the whole family by planning a hiking activity.
If you are looking for a great outdoor activity, there are many to choose from. But if you are looking for something that combines the quiet beauty of nature with an accomplishable goal, why not give hiking a chance. As you begin, here are some basic Hiking Tips to keep in mind.
1. Get your gear together: make sure you have the basics-comfortable hiking boots that have been broken in and lightweight clothing that can be worn in layers.
2. Be sure your backpack contains these essential items: small first aid kit, toilet paper and trowel, trail map and compass, cell phone, flashlight with extra batteries, watch, rain gear, bug spray, sunscreen, sunglasses, small bag for trash, knife, iodine tablets or water filter, lighter or matches, trail snacks, space blanket.
3. Before beginning a hike, take time to study the trailhead sign and to sign the trailhead logbook.
4. Sturdy, lightweight hiking poles should be about chest high. These are especially helpful when traversing rough terrain and can even prevent injury.
5. Take frequent breaks early on in your hike to build energy for later.
6. Don’t forget to eat! Be sure to pack high energy snacks.
7. When taking breaks, spend a few minutes checking your feet for blisters or hot spots.
8. If you are new to hiking (or even if you are not), there is no shame in taking a 10 minute break each hour or before a steep incline or difficult terrain.
9. Be sure to take a drink of water at every break.
10. Get a topographical map of the area where you will be hiking.
11. Have a watch (not just your cell phone) so you can keep up with how long you have been hiking.
12. Always clean up after yourself. Remember, take nothing but pictures leave nothing but footprints!
Hiking is great way to enjoy nature as well as get some exercise. Treks don’t have to be long and take hours/days to complete, but any time spent in the great outdoors is sure to bring pleasure—especially compared to hours spent working the average 8 to 5 job! So grab your gear and get outside-it’s waiting for you to explore it.
