Tamiya started its business in 1948. It was founded by Yoshio Tamiya as a lumber factory in the city of Shizouka, Japan.

The business expanded very fast and after the death of Mr. Tamiya in 1983, Tamiya America Inc. was established in Los Angeles, CA, USA. Tamiya Europe was setup in Germany at the same time. In 1995, Tamiya Philippines Inc. was setup which started model kit production. The first model which Tamiya made in 1948 was of a scale wooden ship kit. The main motto of Tamiya since then has been to deliver merchandise which should be known to be the best in the world in terms of its quality. As of now, Tamiya offers 300 distinct models in areas of high output radio control vehicles and precision static models. These models are sold in Japan and also exported in large quantities to South East Asia, United States of America, Europe and other places in the world. Its standard has reached a level of excellence which is beyond comparison and the finest in the arena of model hobby. Tamiya America is a fully owned subsidiary of Tamiya Inc. and is the main sponsor of the Tamiya Championship Series (TCS) races and the Tamiya/Con model contest. The races are held monthly and the National Championship Event is held annually at their premises in Los Angeles. Tamiya America offers technical support for all its products and also conducts various programs to support all its clients and dealers. It conducts trade shows, Tamiya Mini4WD races and hobby shop races.
Tamiya has its dealers all over the world. Tamiya also offers educational books and material to guide children and people to build their own unique models. Tamiya manufactures a number of variations in radio control vehicles like trucks, semi trucks, tanks, on road vehicles and off road vehicles. It offers ultimate products for people who take it as a hobby to collect various models of vehicles. Tamiya offers a number of magazines updating about the recent additions of models or other products. It has its own catalog and brochure which is circulated worldwide to update people on the range of products, their features, their availability and improvisations done, if any. It also manufactures tools to help people assemble their own radio control car kits.
