Spalted wood is any type of wood coloration that is the result of fungi. Spalting is mostly found in dead trees, but it can also occur in living trees or when a tree has been stressed. There are four types of spalting including pigmentation, white rot, zone lines and common spalting. Three of these outcomes are considered pleasing to the eye.
Pigmentation is also called sapstain. The most common form of sapstain is bluestain and it happens when the dark pigmented fungal hyphae grow in the sapwood parenchyma of a tree. If the hyphae are concentrated in an area, the color change is visible in this location. This is not decay fungi. It is not destructive. However, pigmentation fungi can reduce the toughness of wood, which means its ability to absorb adequate energy before breaking, and it does increase permeability.
