There is a lot to do when seeing your child off to college for the very first time. You will be working to ensure that they have everything they need on that very first day when you drop them off at school. Not to worry though most freshman know just what they will need, that is with the exception of one thing, their health insurance.
As a parent you have probably taken care of their health insurance for their whole life and perhaps the family plan that you have always carried will be enough to cover them when they are away at school as well. Unfortunately, however, many family health insurance plans are regional and depending on where they will be attending school they may find that their health insurance plan doesn't work with the doctors that are around the college campus and that their benefits will serve little purpose in their new location.
One way to avoid this issue is to contact your health insurance plan as soon as you find out where your student will be attending school. It is important to find out what treatment options will be available to them while they are away from home.
In addition to this however, you may wish to check out the student health insurance plan that is offered by the college as well. Although you may think that your health insurance plan is the best option it may actually be more cost effective for your student to get their health insurance plan through the college they are attending. This will also ensure that they can receive the treatment they need in the area that they will be living most of the year.
And if your student is traveling abroad for college or merely for the purposes of finding themselves then you will definitely need to run this by your health insurance company to find out if they will have any health insurance benefits while they are overseas. If they don't then you may need to purchase an additional health insurance plan known as traveler's insurance for your child's health care needs.
