IFixit website experts dissemble iPhone 4 S and think that the old iPhone does not support speech assistant services Siri,this is mainly due to iPhone 4 S in the use of new range sensor.
Distance sensor is used to decide whether the user cheek are closed to mobile phones, and correspondingly closed screen and virtual keyboard. In the past iPhone, only when the user calling distance sensor,it can be activated, and after telephone hanging up,the distance sensor will be closed.
But Siri also need to use distance sensor. When Siri is activated through the "raise-to-speak" option, users need to speak close the phones to cheek. In order to achieve this function, iPhone 4 S distance sensor in continues to be active. This means that the infrared sensor has been flashing LED light, but the infrared LED lamp light is not visible, and only special digital camera can capture.
IFixit said: "in the iPhone 4 S, infrared LED lights and iPhone 4 are totally different, but we do not believe that this is due to the change of the hardware. This function depends on the software system, the software will tell LED lights when to light and when to put out."
But some users think, old iPhone does not support Siri,this is not just because of distance sensor. In the use of Siri, users will need to use "raise-to-speak", Apple also allows iPhone 4 S user to close this option.
Some reports said that Siri need to use the more powerful dual-core processor A5 in iPhone 4 S, but iPad 2 has also used this processor. Other reports think that the main reason is iPhone 4 S using microphone.
It is not clear whether the old iPhone will support Siri. Recent reports said that apple is testing Siri in iPhone 4 and other equipment. But there were also reports said that apple has no plans in the iPhone 4 S supporting Siri outside of the other products.
Some developers and hackers have successfully realize that old iPhone support Siri. For example, hackers Steven Troughton-Smith said he has already transplanted Siri to iPhone 4 and iPod Touch, but it still has some limitations. He will even transplanted Siri to iPhone 3 GS, although performance is not very good. Apple officials did not give the news why Siri does not support old iPhone currently.
